When your feet hurt, your whole life gets smaller.

For years, foot pain came with two choices. Live with it, or lose months to surgery.

Traditional foot surgery often requires a large incision, screws or plates, a hospital operating room, and a long recovery. So most people didn’t really have a choice.

X-ray of a foot after traditional bunion surgery, showing a plate and several screws
Traditional surgery: plates and screws left in the foot
A foot after traditional open surgery, with long stapled incisions and swelling
Traditional surgery: long open incisions, shown here with a post-operative complication

These are not Dr. Pilling’s patients. Images are de-identified and shown only to illustrate traditional open surgery. The clinical photo shows a post-operative complication, not a typical result. Open surgery is still the right choice for some patients, and Dr. Pilling will tell you if it is for you.

Today there’s a better set of choices.

Minimally Invasive Options

Questions patients ask

Will I automatically need surgery?

No. A new patient visit starts with a detailed foot and ankle exam and X-rays, and non-surgical options come first. Surgery is only discussed when it's the right answer for you.

What does “minimally invasive” mean here?

It means doing the least it takes to fix the problem. That includes non-surgical treatments and, when surgery is needed, correction through a few tiny incisions.

Am I awake during the procedure?

For in-office procedures, yes. A local anesthetic numbs your foot, so your foot sleeps and you stay awake and comfortable. A drape blocks your view of the procedure, so you won't see anything being done, but you can talk with Dr. Pilling and the team the whole time.

Will I need screws, plates, or pins?

Dr. Pilling's minimally invasive procedures use little or no internal fixation. The correction is held by your own bone and a supportive dressing.

How small are the incisions, really?

Typically 2 to 3 millimeters, about the tip of a pencil.

How soon can I walk?

Most patients walk out the same day in a surgical shoe or surgical walking boot. Your full recovery depends on you and your procedure, and Dr. Pilling will walk you through it before anything is scheduled.

Is everyone a candidate?

No. Some feet need a different approach, and the exam is where we find that out together. As Dr. Pilling says, “Everybody's an individual. The results that somebody else has seen or had may or may not apply directly to you.”

Can every procedure be done in the office?

No. Some patients and procedures are better suited to a surgery center or hospital. Dr. Pilling will walk you through the best option for you.

My knees or back hurt. Could my feet be part of it?

Sometimes. Flat feet and collapsing arches can change how your legs line up. An exam can show whether your feet are playing a role.

Do you take my insurance?

Most major plans are accepted, including Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare. If you don’t have insurance or we don’t take your plan, you can request a free 15-minute initial consultation with the doctor. It’s not an official patient visit, so it doesn’t include an exam or X-rays.

What happens after I send the form?

You'll get a confirmation by email right away (and by text, if you checked the box for texts), and our team will call you as soon as we can, often within 15 minutes during office hours.

Where are you located?
